Special Issue of ISIJ International on “Metallurgy and Mechanics of Plasticity-Induced Damage Evolution and Fracture” (Submission deadline: 31st August, 2025)

Call for Papers
2024.11.12

The importance of steels, which combine high strength and high ductility, has remained unchanged from the past to the present, and there is a need for even higher performance. To estimate the plastic forming limit and structural strength, it is important to first understand the yield and tensile strength, but to deepen the understanding of the phenomena in extreme conditions, it is necessary to develop the science of fractures after a large plastic deformation, i.e. ductile fracture. From a practical point of view, metal fatigue and hydrogen embrittlement, which can induce fracture at stresses lower than the yield strength, are also important plasticity-related failure phenomena. In these plasticity-related failure phenomena, it is essential to understand the role of plasticity derived from accumulation and movement of lattice defect during fracture. In recent years, the role of lattice defects in the fracture has been elucidated by the development of various observational and computational methods, which combined with aspects of mechanics research that have been the mainstay of fracture research, have led to the development of a scientific theory for the design and assessment of plasticity-induced fracture.

The main topics of this special issue include studies on plasticity-related stress, damage, and fracture. Specifically, experimental and numerical studies on ductile failure, metal fatigue and hydrogen embrittlement are within the framework of the scope. Therefore, metallurgy and mechanics-based study on the plasticity-related damage phenomena will be widely invited.

1. Scope

This special issue widely treats latest research and reviewing, which are related to plasticity-related stress, damage and fracture. In particular, the target phenomena in this framework are ductile fracture, metal fatigue, and hydrogen embrittlement.
